History/Activity

The Charlemont Inn is the longest operating Inn in New England...possibly the entire U.S. It has been an Inn since 1787! Newer wings on the left and right side of the main building were added around 1907 and 1910. There are 14 rooms in use. Some notable former guests:
  • Benedict Arnold
  • British General John Burgoyne
  • Mark Twain
  • President Calvin Coolidge
The Charlemont Inn is a highly "active" place with a history of paranormal activity experienced by both staff and guests alike.
Here are just a few of the experiences the owners told us about:
  • Children hear voices and say that they are "talking to the lady" when no one is there with them.
  • Objects fly off shelves in plain view and even heavy objects such as mirrors and clocks have flown off the wall.
  • Odors of cigar smoke
  • Feelings of a presence....One worker was so convinced someone was behind him, he said "Excuse me" as he backed up. Noone was there.
  • Shadows
  • Appliances. lights, music boxes turning on/off.
  • Random thoughts
  • Noises (doors slamming for one)
  • Linda, one of the owners, was reaching for a door to the unused hallway upstairs and it opened violently and slammed against the wall. She had a dog with her that became extremely upset. It's hair stood straight up.
  • Psychics have said that there are a couple of vortices. One is supposedly the chimney into the tavern area. The other is in the dining room.
  • Charlotte, another owner, saw a levitating bag of potato chips in the kitchen.
  • And here's a favorite: A guest was staying in a room with a history of unusual activity. At about 3am, he was abruptly awakened when small bars of the Inn's soap began to drop onto his head. He promptly checked out and didn't even wait for a refund.

Hot spots for activity are said to be the kitchen, room 18, 19, 21, 22, 23

The following are believed to be the identities of the more commonly encountered spirits of the Inn:
  • "Elizabeth" - most active entity
  • "Fidelia" - a 16 year old girl who died in the Inn on July 29 1849
  • "Sam" and "Louis" - past innkeepers
  • "Norman" - A former cook. The possible source of the cigar odor.
  • "Elisa" - A woman who lived near the Inn who may have been involved with the underground railroad, protecting runaway slaves.
The owners don't believe there are any low level spirits there. No negative energy or feelings have been felt.

A pre-investigation interview was performed by Josh, Nick and Scott a couple of months prior to the investigation. It was determined that an investigation was warranted, especially after we ourselves experienced activity during the interview in the dining room. The lights flickered and temperatures were fluctuating. A couple of us felt cold spots.

INITIAL SET-UP: Base camp was set up in the dining room and manned by Sarah and Steph during the investigation.

EVP

While in room 18, Greg asks a local historian/sensitive about a woman believed to be one of the entities in the Inn.: "So, do you feel she's here? Elisa (last name deleted)?" She replies "Well, I was hoping she might be." Immediately after, you hear a pop, then an eerie breath or whisper.

In room 20, Greg asks: "Are you here with us now?" Immediately following you can hear what we believe is a male voice saying "Twelve o'clock". Was it an entity asking us to return at the "witching hour"?

Both EVP's were cleaned up with Audacity's high and low pass filters.

Conclusions

Map of Inn's second floor.
Our findings correlated fairly well with the Inn's supposed paranormal hot spots.

We expected this investigation to be very interesting and possibly one that we would look back on as one of our best experiences.
We were not disappointed. Here is a summary of the activity:
  • At base camp, on the wireless remote IR camera, an orb was witnessed by Josh travelling down the stairs. When it got to the base of the stairs, it rounded the corner and continued down the hallway as if it had an intelligence behind it, directing it's movements.
  • A handful of investigators spent some time in room 18. The lights were turned off and everyone left the room. The BPG had control of the keys to this room, as well as many other rooms in the older section of the Inn. Upon returning to the room less than an hour later, the lights were on. No one had re-entered the room until that point.
  • John, Josh and Ron Kolek were in room 21 and trying to make contact with the Inn's spirits. Suddenly, they heard a click and the room went pitch black. The bedside lamp with a turn-key switch had just turned off on its own.

  • THE STORAGE HALLWAY -- this dark, unused hallway off the main second floor hallway was quite active:

  • Rapid temperature fluctuations between 50 and 70 registered on the IR thermometer.
  • Scratching noises were heard in one room from a source that could not be identified.
  • Multiple anomalous photos were captured.
  • Inconsisitent EMF readings registered on our meters.

Three of us stayed overnight in rooms 18, 21 and 23. Scott felt a presence in room 23 around 02:00, as if someone else was in the room. The feeling lasted for several minutes. Ron and John did not report anything unusual during the overnight in rooms 18 and 21.

The following report was prepared by Josh Mantello:

Evidence and Paranormal Events:

Event #1 consisted of the lights in room #18 possibly being turned on by themselves. This was experienced by Ron Kolek and Greg O. These investigators left room 18 and each specifically remember shutting off each light inside the room and closing the door and locking it. *** Note: BPG members were given keys to rooms noted to haunted and no others were allowed in these rooms. *** A short time later the same investigators went back by the room and saw that that lights were now in fact turned on.

Looking at this piece of activity, the room was only accessible by the one locked door. It is possible that someone with another key could have gone in and turned the light back on. It is also possible that human error occurred and they did leave a light on when thinking the lights were off. Neither of these can be proved or ruled out. But the fact that this room was reportedly to be one of previous activity can not be ignored either.

Event #2 consists of myself, John D. and Ron K. inside room #21. This is another room with a noted past and shares a connected bathroom with room #23 the most "haunted" room of the building. While standing in the room taking readings consisting of EMF, Trifield and temperature, a nightstand light with a knob-type switch turned itself off. The 3 of us were standing around the table somewhat and this was obviously noticed due to the fact that this light was supplying the only light in the room and the sound of the knob turning made a distinct click.

John was the closest to the stand when the light off and when I did turn to look at him thinking "why did you shut that off" it was obvious that he could not have shut the light of having both hands full of equipment. At this time basecamp was notified of the event and the time was documented.

It is possible that the knob used to turn the light on and off could not have been turned all the way into the on position. The tension of the switch then gave way forcing it back off. This, though possible, I find unlikely due to the fact that the light had been on for a long duration even prior to our entering the room and what was just previously explained usually will happen shortly after the knob being turned. All equipment in the room being monitored at the time showed no readings.

While investigating an unused section of the inn that is mostly utilized as storage, members also experienced not-so-tangible paranormal activity. In this section investigators had very odd "feeling" and slight EMF fluctuations were found while walking through. IR thermometer readings were fluctuating from 50 to 70 degrees. Also during the walk thought of this section Greg O. shot a photo showing what appears to be a face looking down from the ceiling. This can be viewed above in the photo section.

Shown in the photo section is also a photo of what I will call evidence #1 showing a distinct orb on the upper bunk above Greg O. As disputed as orb pictures are I offer these conclusions - and there is no need to go over what is needed to rule out an orb. This was a photo taken early in the evening in room number #2, the same location that Event #2 took place. All previous pictures taken in this room were free of dust orbs. This orb is also abnormally brighter then most dust orbs and prior to this picture being taken a medium was mediating in the room with others wanting to make spirit contact.

Evidence #2: I will only mention briefly, as it was only seen on the TV monitors at basecamp and not recorded. The IR remote camera was monitoring the main stairs case. While looking at the stairs I watched an orb with a distinct flight path travel down the stairs and then make the turn on the bottom of the stairs and then go toward the other half of the Inn. Again dust orbs can not be ruled out in the circumstance but neither can the distinct flight path of the orb.

Evidence #3 consists of the recording of the Hi-8 camera. It was placed in room #23. This room was locked and considered a secured room with no one allowed to enter. The bathroom door was locked from the inside and I held the key to the main door all night. A motion sensor was placed in front of the camera along with a digital voice recorder on VAR and a remote temperature sensor being monitored at basecamp. During the recording at 01:05:33 and :35 distinct taps can be heard on the microphone of the camera. These taps were not loud, but obviously on the camera. I have no explanation for this. If it were the summertime, I would maybe say it was a bug attracted to the IR emitter of the camera but the investigation took place in January.
Conclusions:

At this point in time I can safely say that I feel that the Charlemont Inn is a "Haunted" building and the members of the group did experience some paranormal activity while investigation the building. But I do feel that further study, experimentation and investigation needs to done at the location. At this point it is safe to say based on the evidence found events that occurred that there is at least one "spirit haunt" and the possibility of a residual haunting is not ruled out.

The vast history that the building holds and the numerous accounts by witnesses point to multiple spirits within the inns walls. On the night of 1-21-06 the BPG was not able to determine how many and what spirits might have been present in the building. But I do feel that over a period of further investigations focusing further on EVP, ITC and other experiments that center toward direct communication with any said spirits might lend a hand in finding the ID's of any resident spirits along with any further research into the history of the Inn and any incidents that might lend toward a haunting.

---- END OF REPORT

Many thanks to Inn owners Charlotte and Linda for their wonderful hospitality. If you need a place to stay, check out the Charlemont Inn and be sure to ask for an "active" room! Also, order the wings. They are awesome.
